In conjunction with the exhibition “Beyond Emptiness” at SOAS Gallery, artist Raymond Fung and SOAS historian Dr. Malcolm McNeill will be in conversation on Thursday, 8 October, 6–7pm.
Drawing on Fung’s work across architecture, painting and installation, Fung and McNeill will discuss the relationship between ink art and the built environment, the significance of emptiness and space in Chinese visual culture – alluding to the liubai or “leaving blank” iconised in Fung’s canvas.
The discussion will reflect on the continued relevance of these ideas to contemporary thinking on architecture and our relationship with the natural environment - how space, nature, the built environment, cultural tradition, and evolving artistic techniques have shaped Fung’s art over recent decades and explore the interplay between his roles as architect and ink painter.
We welcome you to join this meaningful conversation.
