Awakening by Liu Guofu Welcomes Guests to POLY MGM MUSEUM

We are pleased to share that Awakening (2021) by the gallery artist Liu Guofu is now on display at the Level 2 corridor of MGM Macau - one of the key passage connecting guests to POLY MGM MUSEUM.

Commissioned by MGM, Awakening was presented as a centrepiece at “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2021” and was subsequently included in the MGM Chairman’s Collection. In 2026, 3812 Gallery presented Liu Guofu’s first overseas museum solo exhibition “Painting of Entropy” at the Rothko Museum in Latvia, where Awakening was again featured as one of the exhibition’s core works. The exhibition closed on 30 August 2026, after which Awakening returned to MGM Macau.

In 2021, Awakening (2021) was presented as a centrepiece at “Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale”, and MGM Macau held a symposium for the special exhibition “Awakening”

One of Liu Guofu’s representative works, Awakening is a monumental diptych measuring 200 × 500cm. It is the largest work of his career to date and marks a significant breakthrough in his abstract painterly language. The work is articulated through layered tonalities of blue that evoke both oceanic depth and atmospheric suspension. From a distance, it appears as a submerged horizon, with light seeming to rise rather than descend through the colour field; up close, innumerable linear brushstrokes emerge, each applied with disciplined restraint. These strokes do not construct illusionistic depth in the Western perspectival sense; instead, they generate a spatial field structured through rhythm, accumulation and breath, one centred on the concept of “Chi”.
