Kwan Yung Yee 關蓉而

Overview
Kwan Yung Yee, Sanctuary (2), 2023, Acrylic on canvas 布上壓克力, 60 x 60cm

Kwan's style is characterized by clear lines and blocks of colours, retaining the digital feel of her original digital artworks. Her work is inspired by her research on the New Art Movement and Japanese prints, utilizing highly stylized natural elements, organic forms, curves, and especially flowers or plants. The artworks are composed of lines, graphic patterns, contrasting spaces, and flat surfaces.

In Kwan Yung Yee's latest works, the artist expresses her imagination of meeting God and creates a sanctuary that transcends time and space. Inspired by several Psalms in the Bible that talk about finding comfort and protection in God, the artist creates a quiet and peaceful atmosphere in her artwork to lead the viewers into a hidden space far away from reality. Through art and faith, the artist hopes to help people find their inner peace. In artworks, the presence of lilies is often drawn from the Bible. God has likened Himself to "the lily of the valley" (Song of Solomon 2:1), and as a result, the lily holds a symbolic meaning of God's grace in Christian beliefs. Apart from representing purity and holiness, the lily serves as a symbol of encouragement and solace from God in times of adversity. It teaches us to respect and cherish life, and to live fearlessly and joyfully.

Femininity is another important element in Kwan's artwork, which is full of feminine qualities and delicate emotions that come from the heart. Her artwork reflects her own delicate, soft, and sensitive personality.
