J. Lei

概覽

Born in 1979, J.LEI is a French artist based in Asia for the past 13 years, between Hong Kong and Singapore. Her abstract practice explores the tensions between chaos and balance, movement and stillness, through instinctive gestures layered onto photographic landscapes and mixed-media surfaces. Through series such as Tumulte and Flow, she transforms existing images into emotional and mental landscapes where lines, rhythms, and organic forms evoke memory, perception, and invisible movement.

Her work is nourished by a constant reflection on philosophy, psychology, and social behaviors. Her creative process moves between structure and release, control and unpredictability, allowing the work to progressively reveal its own direction. While creating, she often listens to podcasts and audiobooks exploring existentialism, human relationships, collective dynamics, or contemporary anxieties. These reflections subtly infuse the work, not as illustrations of ideas, but as underlying tensions and questions embedded within the compositions themselves.

Although she created privately for more than two decades, her work only became public in late 2025. Following an open call selection, she exhibited for the first time at the Contemporary Reflection Art Exhibition at Cornerstone Studios in London in December 2025. Shortly after, one of her artworks was sold at auction for fifteen times its starting price, marking an early recognition of her emerging artistic practice.
