Hsiao Chin: Great Ego in Infinity: Bonhams Hong Kong Private Selling Exhibition

Hsiao Chin is widely recognised as a leading master of post-war abstract art, one of the Chinese artists to shape a transnational modernist narrative. Rooted in Eastern philosophy yet fluent in Western avant‑garde languages, he forged a distinctive visual poetics that resonated across Europe and beyond.

 

In 1961, he co‑founded the Punto International Art Movement in Milan. The movement facilitated a dialogue that enriched the spiritual dimensions of modern art. His friendships with Lucio Fontana and exchanges with artists including Tàpies, exemplify the rich East–West dialogue his practice sustained; later ties to Mark Rothko culminated in a 2020 presentation at the Rothko Museum, confirming his international standing. Hsiao Chin’s works have entered the collections of world-renowned institutions, including MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Musée Guimet and M+, etc.

 

The exhibition title “Great Ego in Infinity” captures a profound exploration of identity, existence, and the cosmos. This exhibition traces seven decades of his creative journey and invites visitors to reflect on how Hsiao Chin's iconic symbols—particularly the concept of “Punto”- the "point" in Italian — illuminate this intricate connection.
