anothermountainman (Stanley Wong) 又一山人 (黃炳培)

Overview
Stanley Wong, also known as “anothermountainman”, is a Hong Kong artist, photographer and designer best known for his “Red White Blue” series, a series of artworks based on the shopping bags commonly used in Hong Kong and presented at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005.

Wong graduated from the Hong Kong Technical Teachers’ College Department of Design and Technology in 1980. After five years as a graphic designer, Wong began a fifteen-year career in the advertising industry, holding several prestigious posts across Asia and receiving acclaim for his advertising campaign for the Hong Kong MTR. During this time Wong adopted the pseudonym “anothermountainman” as a tribute to the 17th-century Chinese artist Bada Shanren (shanren literal trans. “mountain man”). He used the pseudonym for artwork created for non-commercial purposes.

In 2001, Wong began a collection of artwork named “Building Hong Kong”, the most famous component of which was the “Red White Blue” series. Commenting on the motive behind the series, Wong said that the artwork was created at a time when negative sentiment was rife in Hong Kong culture, and he wished to inspire pride in Hong Kong identity.

Wong has won a great many creative awards in local, regional and international graphic design and advertising competitions, including the Award for Best Artist at both the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards 2012 and the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards 2011. Wong has held several solo exhibitions of his fine art and photographs, as well as participating in numerous group exhibitions.
