Artist Talk | Between the Seen and Unseen | 21 November 2026, 3pm | London

We are delighted to hold the opening reception of "Liu Guofu: Painting of Entropy" at 3812 Gallery London on Saturday, 21 November 2026, from 2pm to 5pm, with the artist talk, "Between the Seen and Unseen", at 3pm, shedding light on the artist's creative exploration and artistic evolution.

Marking the exhibition's arrival in London following Liu's acclaimed presentation at the Rothko Museum in Latvia, the discussion will bring together the artist, Dr. Malcolm McNeil, art historian at SOAS University of London, and Calvin Hui, exhibition curator and co-founder of 3812 Gallery. The dialogue will examine how an artist's visual language evolves through intuition, innovation and an ongoing pursuit of "strangeness" and "difference". It will explore how the brushstrokes obscured beneath the visible surface continue to exert their presence, with layers of seen and unseen marks coalescing into an encompassing sense of light, qi and space.

From the relationship between materials and artistic expression to the influence of music, the dynamics of repetition and variation, and the interplay between order and entropy, the speakers will reflect on how Liu’s paintings move between the visible and the hidden, the familiar and the unfamiliar. The conversation will further consider how art transcends individual experience to create a collective resonance with viewers, opening up new ways of seeing, interpreting and engaging with the work.

The celebration also marks 3812 Gallery’s 15th anniversary, making this occasion all the more special and meaningful.
