Prudence Mak 麥雅端

Prudence Mak is a Hong Kong designer, artist, and creative entrepreneur best known as the founder and chief designer of Chocolate Rain, the storytelling design brand she established in 2000. Her practice draws on childhood dreams, wonderland imagery, and memories of Hong Kong, translating them into a distinctive visual universe populated by handcrafted characters, fashion, accessories, books, exhibitions, and cross-disciplinary projects.

Graduating from the University of Alberta, Canada, in 1998, Mak has worked as a fashion and accessories designer since 2000, later expanding her practice through further study supported by the DesignSmart Initiative scholarship at Central Saint Martins in London in 2008. Through Chocolate Rain, she has developed a body of work marked by handmade craftsmanship, mixed media, recycled fabrics, and a strong commitment to imagination, environmental awareness, and positive creative energy.

Mak’s career bridges design, art, retail, public engagement, and cultural collaboration. She founded Chocolate Rain Jewelry & Design Co. Ltd. in 2001, launched DIY classes in 2003, and opened the DIY café Art in Progress in 2004 to share the creativity of handmade practice with a broader public. Her crossover projects have involved international and luxury brands including Swarovski, Stella McCartney, Luella, and Clinique, while her works and brand presentations have reached audiences in Hong Kong and beyond, including appearances noted by international media and museum contexts.

Recognised for both creative and civic contribution, Mak received the Ten Outstanding Designers Award in 2010 and was named one of Hong Kong’s Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 2012. She has also served the local design community through the Hong Kong Designers Association and youth mentoring initiatives, reinforcing her role as an influential figure In Hong Kong’s contemporary creative landscape.
