The Sotheby's Talks webinar "The Artist as Astronaut – Hsiao Chin" was held on 16th March. Joining Sotheby’s Felix Kwok in conversation was Calvin Hui, 3812 Gallery Co-founder and Wang Duan, Vice President Huayi Brothers Art and Director of Song Art Museum.

Calvin Hui
Calvin Hui is an acclaimed cultural entrepreneur, art advisor, collector, and curator based in Hong Kong. Recognised as one of the leading figures in the local art scene, he has actively promoted modern and contemporary Chinese art over the years, with a focus on ink art. He co-founded 3812 Gallery in Hong Kong in 2011, and opened in London in 2018, which speaks to the rapid expansion of Calvin Hui’s art business internationally in recent years. Co-chairperson of MGM China Holdings, Ltd. Pansy Ho appointed Hui as the art consultant and curator in charge of building the Chairman’s Collection for the MGM Cotai project. In November 2019, Hui launched INK NOW Shanghai collaborating with Suning Art Museum to co-present the Inquiry on Water exhibition and the first international ink art symposium. Following the notion “Eastern Origin in Contemporary Expression,” he aspires to raise international attention to Chinese ink art by grounding it in academic research and market insights.

 

Wang Duan
As director of Song Art Museum, Wang advocates Song Art Museum as a warm art museum that lives for the public. Song Art Museum has successfully held several fine art exhibitions with a global vision since its opening in 2017: 2017 from Vincent Willem Van Gogh to Chinese Contemporary Art, 2018 Through Pines the Bright Moon Glows - 'Song' in Ancient Chinese Paintings, Empathy and the international exhibition Louise Bourgeois: The Eternal Thread in 2019; Group exhibition Abstraction (s) — Abstract Art Cluster Exhibition, solo exhibition Green by young artist Zhao Zhao, and 2020 — Song Art Museum Invitational Exhibition, The Revival of Tradition, etc.

For the management and operation of Song museum, Wang Duan emphasizes and continues to devote herself to socialized promotion and integration of art, advocating the role of Song museum as a platform with a public education function to maximum reach. She initiated, and has long been, the coordinator and host of the public academic project Song Dialogue of Song Art Museum. In addition, Song Museum actively explores and promotes public education activities under her administration, carrying out Seed Plan and Annual Ring, and promoting art education projects in multiple dimensions.

 

Felix Kwok
Felix Kwok, who joined Sotheby’s in 2012, has been actively involved in many record-breaking auctions, spearheading highly successful themed sales, including “Movimento Punto,” “Postwar Asian Art,” “Asian Spirit: A Global Mission,” Modern Rangers,” “Modern Vision,” and “Modern Icons,” which set new benchmarks for Modern Art and received enthusiastic acclaim from both the market and academia. He was also instrumental in introducing Western masters in Sotheby's evening sales in Hong Kong, with works from the likes of Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Bernard Buffet, Georges Mathieu and Enrico Castellani.

In his current role, Kwok serves as the Head of Modern Art at Sotheby’s Asia. He is a Sotheby’s auctioneer, as well as a regular speaker on modern art and the business of auction at major educational institutions and organisations.
