Beyond Emptiness

3812 Gallery is delighted to present “Beyond Emptiness” - Raymond Fung Solo Exhibition, in collaboration with SOAS Gallery. Through ink, installation and selected architectural works, the exhibition reveals how Fung’s understanding of space and his engagement with Chinese artistic traditions inform a visual language grounded in harmony between people, place and the environment.

The exhibition aims to explore the harmonious relationship between architecture and ink art, delving deeply into Fung's unique philosophy, which is profoundly influenced by environmental, local, cultural, and human factors throughout the design process. Fung believes that great architecture must be integrated with the surrounding history, culture, and environment, adhering to the principle of "building less, avoiding the strange," and embracing the philosophy that "nothing gives rise to something, and something arises from nothing." Through this concept, visitors will experience the quiet power conveyed by the works in the space, feeling the notion that "silence speaks louder than words.”

The exhibition features a selection of Raymond Fung's ink paintings and digital installations, further exploring the interaction between humanity and space. A documentary and preparatory sketches will also be on display, offering insight into how architecture interacts with its surroundings and how these observations have inspired Fung's understanding of nature — later incorporated into the cultural and artistic elements of his curation.

"Beyond Emptiness" highlights a new series and concept rooted in the traditional Chinese painting technique of "leaving blank," (留白) in traditional Chinese ink painting — the deliberate retention of unpainted space, where absence is as meaningful as what is depicted — aptly reflects the tranquillity and depth of space, embracing a rhythmic sense of breathing.” At the same time, the exhibition encourages reflection on environmental issues, demonstrating how respect for and protection of nature can be effectively integrated into architectural design and artistic creation.

Through the concept of "Breathing," we invite each visitor to rethink our contemporary relationship with the environment through traditional Chinese artistry and philosophy, brought to life in the artist’s evocative “Breathing” series.
